What is ISO 9223?

ISO 9223:2012 classifies the corrosivity of outdoor atmospheres into six categories — C1 (very low) to CX (extreme) — based on the three key environmental factors that drive metal corrosion: the temperature-humidity complex, sulfur dioxide (SO₂) pollution, and airborne chloride salinity.

How CAMS enhances the assessment

This tool combines ISO 9223 classification with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) — a global atmospheric reanalysis providing gridded SO₂, humidity and temperature. CAMS supplies the regional background, while a near-coastal chloride model derived from distance-to-sea provides the marine contribution. Combining both inputs yields two matched snapshots — the current period and a 2013 reference — so a single site can be compared over time.

Marine exposure — distance to sea controls airborne chloride (S0–S3), the dominant driver in coastal environments.
